The New Year’s Day

We celebrate the beginning of the New Year. We decorate the Entrance Way with “Shimenawa” (twisted straw ropes) to prevent the unworthy things from coming in and erect two “Kadomatsu” (pine trees for the Entrance Way) to invite Gods to come in. Many people visit a shrine or a temple to give their first prayer for the year, which is called “Hatsumode” (detailed in the separate article).

The family members gather and pray for their health and happiness while drinking “Otoso” (the New Year’s special “Spiced Sake”) and eating “Osechi Ryori” (the New Year’s special dishes).

We also give children “Otoshidama” which is detailed in the separate article “Otoshidama”
