The New Yearfs Day

We celebrate the beginning of the New Year. We attach the gate with gShimenawa (the twisted straw rope to prevent the dirty thing from coming in)h and erect two gKadomatsu (the pine trees for the gate)h to ask the god to come in.@Many people visit a shrine or a temple which is called gtheir first visit of the year to the shrine or the templeh.@The family members gather and pray for their health and happiness of the new year drinking Sake (Otoso) and eating new yearfs special dish (Osechi Ryori).

You can enjoy the acrobatic climbing of a ladder, the performance by the music band of the fire brigade and the simultaneous discharge of water through the hoses of the fire engines.

The festival of a votive light stand    Funabashi Daijingu (5 Miyamoto)

New adults light the wooden three storied votive light stand which is designated as one of the cultural assets of the prefecture.

A grand race of citizenfs EKIDEN in commemoration of Coming-of-Age Day

The race starts from the athletic field of Undokoen and go on to Misaki, Toyotomi, Kowagama and finally to the goal of Funabashi Arena.

Coming-of-Age ceremony Citizenfs Culture Hall

This year about 6,650 people will become new adults. The ceremony will be planned and managed by the new adults who volunteered to do.

The requiem mass for a great statue of Buddha    Fudoin (3 Honcho)

The traditional event to mourn for the two fishermen who protected the fishing area of Funabashi, started in Edo era. They heap the statue itself with rice. They say if we eat that rice, the divine help makes us healthy.

Toward the end of July through the same of February Viewing the plum blossoms.

The Festival of Setsubun (the day before@the calendrical beginning of spring)     Funabashi Daijingu (5 Miyamoto)

The rites of praying for the safety of the New Year and Mamemaki (A bean-scattering  ceremony) will be held.  They scatter the parched beans crying gOni wa Soto Fuku wa Uchih which means gExpelling the evils and calling in happinessh
