My Experience ofEast-Japan Earthquake and Its Lessons
Mai Van Kieu from Vietnam

When the big earthquake took place, I was at our office in Ningyocho, Chuo-ku. Our System Department is on the first floor of the building. Shakes were so big that I was really scared that the walls and the building itself would collapse. (There is no earthquake in Vietnam, my homeland)

I had much more difficulty on my way back home. I left my office at around five in the evening on foot heading for Ichikawa, as all the train/bus/taxi services were suspended. There, I took a rest at a coffee shop until four in the morning. Then I resumed walking. On the way I happened to take a taxi, which was involved in a heavy traffic jam. It was at eight a.m. when I finally arrived home at Miyamoto in Funabashi City.

The big earthquake gave me two lessons. First, cellular phone battery should always be kept charged as I could not call my family/friend, nor check up map or accommodation due to insufficient battery charge of my cellular phone. Second, a reasonable amount of water and foodstuffs should be kept at home for emergencies, as I found it difficult to buy foods on that day.
