When an earthquake strikes

An earthquake is the shaking of the ground. It is the result of a sudden release of energy in the Earth's crust that creates seismic waves.

Japan is a country where often earthquakes take place. 20 % of strong earthquakes over magnitude 6 in the world occurred in Japan. When you come across an earthquake, take care of the following.

At home

●Keep yourself safely like under the table. If there is no table, protect your head with something like pillow.

●Secure an exit to evacuate in case of damages of door and window. (It may happen that you are shut in house because of transformation of door and window.)

●Put fire out. If you have a big earthquake, or if you are away from fire origin, don’t rush to put fire out.

Walking along the street

●Keep away from brick wall.

●Keep apart from buildings because debris of glass or roofing tiles may sometimes fall down.

●Don't get close to a hanging electric cable.

In train or subway

●Hang on to a strap or hold a handrail tightly for a sudden stop.

●When train stops, don't rush to open doors with emergency cock, nor go out from window.

●Behave yourself calmly listening to announcements.

Driving a car

●Feeling of an earthquake, speed down slowly, stop your car on left side and turn off the engine.
●Stay in your car until shaking stops.
●When you go away from your car, be sure to leave the key with doors unlocked.
