Setsubun is the traditional day before the first day of spring. In the evening people throw parched soy beans while shouting gFortune in, and demon outh. At big shrines and temples, bean scattering ceremonies are held with many participants and spectators.

Hinamatsuri is an occasion to pray for young girlsf growth and happiness. Most homes with little girls display dolls and dedicate to them peach blossoms, special colored and diamond-shaped rice cakes, white Sake and other offerings.

gNakanoki no Tsujigirih; Yasaka Jinja (1-12-1 Nakanoki)

gTsujigirih means marking the boundary between two villages. There a big straw-made snake is hang over the tree to prevent evils and contagious diseases from coming into the village, which is now one of the intangible cultural assets in Funabashi.

 gBuddhist ceremony for the soul of the departedh; Fudoin (3-4-6 Honcho)

This is a traditional but unusual memorial service started in 1825 for two fishermen sacrificed for protecting fishing ground and the casualties of Tsunami. It is now designated as an intangible cultural asset of the city. In the course of this service, boiled rice is heaped onto the face and the other part of Buddha statute. People eating this rice are believed to enjoy good health.

We celebrate the beginning of the New Year eating Zoni and Osechi Ryori, and drinking Otoso (New Yearfs medicinal drinks).@Many people visit shrines or temples to pray for health and happiness of their family, which is called Hatsumode.
